The Bakersfield Fire Department in Bakersfield, California is looking for some new recruits, which could include yourself.

Bakersfield firefighters say their department is like a second family to them, and now they are looking for new firefighters to fill the spots of those who’ve recently been promoted up the ranks.

Bakersfield firefighter Wesley Howard says, “I love being a firefighter and all the tasks that come with it.” Howard has been roaming the halls of station #1 since he could walk. He even has a picture of the toddler version of himself riding with his uncle in one of the fire engines. Now he’s wearing the BFD fire helmet to serve his community.

“It’s a pretty rewarding experience. I’m honored to be here. I think about it every day. That picture then to where I’m at now – it’s pretty cool coming to work everyday,” said Howard.

The family atmosphere is what motivates many of the Bakersfield firefighters to serve their city. Now that family is looking to grow. The Bakersfield Fire Public Information Officer Casey Snow says the department is looking for 30 new firefighters.

Applicants need to have their Firefighter 1 certificate, Emergency Medical Technician Certificate and their Physical Ability Test certificate. If you have your certifications and want to apply, the Bakersfield Fire recruitment window ends July 22.
