Mind who you open the door for.

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning people about companies that seek to scam people using multiple fake door-to-door business tactics. While there are some legitimate companies who go about gaining clientele this way, read through these telltale signs that can save you from getting duped because of someone else’s fraudulence.

Scammers may present themselves as people showing up at your door or giving you a phone call saying that they’re attempting to upgrade your security system. They may say they’re offering special services and attempt to have you sign a “contract.” This can leave your valuable information vulnerable and subject to illegal activity.

Be careful of any salesperson who shows up telling you they want to offer you services before having you sign something. This can be a scheme that ends up as a monthly service fee you’re unknowingly signing up for.

If you are interested in doing business with a particular company, make sure to do your research. On BBB’s website, you can look up any reputable company and check what other people’s experiences are like. Any door-to-door salesman should have a solicitor’s license, so ask for an ID to confirm this.

These scammers also tend to make false claims like increasing crime rates in your neighborhood. If you know this to be untrue, make a mental note of it as a red flag.

Lastly, be sure to read through all the fine print of any contract before you sign your name.
