Founders will be closing its doors amid a former employee’s allegations of a racist work environment.

Founders’ manager Dominic Ryan claimed he was unaware that his employee was black, but didn’t seem to deny the accusations. He also claims he doesn’t know what a black person looks like.

Founders was supposed to release Canadian Breakfast Stout today, but now the taproom in Detroit will be refunding those tickets, citing concerns for employee safety. The taproom is less than two years old, opening in late 2017, but that didn’t stop the allegations against the company from from making national headlines.

Tracy Evans is the former manager who brought forth the racist allegations to HR. In a deposition, his attorney, Jack Schulz, asked Ryan if he was aware that Evans was black. Throughout the conversation, Ryans deflects, stating “I’m not sure of his lineage, so I can’t answer that.”

Schulz then asks if he’s ever met a black person born in America before. Ryan answers yes. However, when Schulz asks Ryan to clarify if Barack Obama or Michael Jordan are black, Ryan responded saying he had never met them in person to know their lineage.

Reps for Founders claim Ryan’s words were taken out of the context, despite the fact that he was under oath. The company claims Evans was fired for his poor job performance, but Evans tells a different narrative. He says he was the only minority manager in the facility and frequently heard slurs from fellow co-workers. Evans stated that a general employee, lower-tier printer was referred to as the “black guy printer,” while the nicer one for management was referred to as the “white guy printer.”

In an emailed statement to ticket holders for the CBS event, a representative for Founders states, “It’s with sincere regret that we share with you that the CBS bottle pickup and CBS tapping party at tour Detroit location won’t be happening, as scheduled. In light of the recent events and, more importantly, out of concern of our employees’ safety, we have decided to close the Detroit taproom from Friday, October 25 until further notice.”

The Grand Rapids Canadian Breakfast Stout release will still move forward as planned.
