Say Yes Buffalo is arming college freshman with the essentials for their first year of dorm life.

Senator Tim Kennedy and Say Yes Buffalo have teamed up to collect everything from towels to sheets to soaps to school supplies in a Dorm Room Survival Kit Drive. This drive is meant to save low-income students, who already received a Say Yes Buffalo scholarship that pays for any New York state school tuition, the expense of everyday needs for living at college.

Say Yes Buffalo say half the students who received a scholarship have a combined family income of less than $25,000.

“I think the No. 1 item that comes forward is the bedding and the towels that students aren’t able to access on their own,” said Say Yes Buffalo Executive Director David Rust. “The dorm sheets are bigger than a traditional standard mattress, so you have to go out and get something a little bit different than they may have used their whole life. They’re not always easy to access and find so we find students come forward with that as the No. 1 need.”

The drive will end this Thursday. Students will be able to pick out all of the supplies they need the following Friday.

If you’re out shopping and you happen to pick up an extra pair of sheets, you can find all the drop-off locations at WKBW.com.
