The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has come out with a new plan this morning that would loosen regulations on emissions of methane gas.

This is certain to get the attention of many who work in Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry. Pennsylvania is the No. 2 gas-producing state in the nation behind the state of Texas. Governor Tom Wolf wants to cut back on how much methane Pennsylvania pumps out.

Methane is the primary component in natural gas. It frequently leaks, or is intentionally released during the drilling process. Gov. Wolf likely won’t be happy to hear this recent news. He even has a methane reduction strategy. The governor says he is committed to cleaner, healthier air.

The EPA is headed by Incumbent Andrew Wheeler, who says that President Trump wants to remove burdens from the oil and gas industry and instead loosen regulations on methane gas.

It costs companies big money to monitor leaks and control methane gas in general, which leaves these major companies with a tough decision. They can either go along with the loosening of the regulations and possibly boost their profits, or they risk coming out against the president and winning over consumers who care about the environment.

Oil giants like ExxonMobil have already voiced concerns with the EPA’s plans.
