A Michigan courtroom was full of support for a young boy’s adoption.

A five-year-old boy from Grand Rapids, Michigan invited his entire kindergarten class to be at his adoption hearing on Thursday, and they all showed up with pink paper hearts to show their support for their fellow classmate.

Michael’s father told CNN that his favorite part of the hearing was when the judge asked each of his classmates to explain what Michael means to them.

Answers like, “I love Michael” or “Michael is my best friend” came from his kindergarten friends as they listened in on the finalization of his adoption.

The judge said this is the first time she’s ever hosted a class of kindergartners in her courtroom.

Michael and his friends attend Wealthy Elementary School in Grand Rapids. Knowing his adoption finalization was coming up soon, his mother suggested the idea to Mrs. McKee, Michael’s teacher. McKee organized a field trip and a bus for her fellow students to be present at the Kent County courtroom.

Prior to Thursday’s hearing, Michael had been placed in foster care with his would-be parents for a year. The couple have been married for ten years, and Michael is the first addition to their family.

“We didn’t have any kids prior to that, and things got pretty chaotic in a hurry,” said Michael’s father.

“Giving a kid a permanent home, a forever family, is just the best gift you can give anybody,” Michael’s mother told WXYZ.

The judge even let Michael slam down the gavel himself to make his own adoption official.

To top off the day, Michael and his classmates got the opportunity to meet Santa afterwards.
