Legislation concerning the cannabis plant will begin on Jan. 11.

Hawaii’s legislature approved the decriminalization bill and sent it to Democratic Governor David Ige back in May. According to Your EDM, Ige neither signed nor vetoed the bill, which allowed it to become law.

With Hawaii newly on the cannabis wave, marijuana is now either decriminalized or legal in over half of the 50 states.

“The Aloha State” is one of 15 that has decriminalized marijuana, but not full on legalized it – yet.

Under Hawaii’s law, there is still a $130 fine for possessing up to three grams of the plant. However, serving jail time within state borders has now been nixed.

According to a statement from the Marijuana Policy Project, “Unfortunately, three grams would be the smallest amount of any state that has decriminalized (or legalized) simple possession of marijuana. Still, removing criminal penalties and possible jail time for possession of a small amount of cannabis is an improvement.”

So far, all efforts to legalize marijuana in Hawaii have fizzled.

Local reports say lawmakers are concerned it could hurt the state’s medical dispensary system.
