A group of young Milwaukee artists are working to bring people of all backgrounds together and change the narrative of their city.

They’ve put together a live show titled Hip Hop DNA Volume 1 that will debut at the Marcus Performing Arts Center this week. It features all local talent, diverse dancers, singers, rappers, and musicians. It includes jazz, soul, funk and hip-hop. Many of the performer are also local teachers. They want this show to inspire the next generation and believe music is the universal language to do so.

“We want to try to work towards the greater good. Others like myself are trying to strive to build a bridge for and see how we can try to make some stronger connectivity amongst the city,” said musician B-Free.

“It’s really supposed to be a show that bridges the generations and is also a multicultural show because our vision is not just to play music. We want to be a cultural force in the overall city, especially to benefit people of color,” said the creator, Kiran Vedula.

“We live in Milwaukee. You know how that can be. It can be a lot. It’s crazy. But, it’s like if you can find a mutual ground or a crossroad where people can come and create artistically, especially, then we might have something. And if you can inspire some people along the way – even better,” said choreographer Christopher Gilbert.

The all-ages show is this Friday at 7:30 PM in the Marcus Performing Arts Center. You can buy your tickets online or at the door.
