With Thanksgiving only two days away, it’s important to keep in mind the potential hazards that can come about while you’re trying to spread holiday cheer.

Every year, tens of thousands of Americans wind up in the hospital on Thanksgiving – and mostly due to what goes on in the kitchen. According to CBS 2, cutting and carving are typically the reasons that people ultimately end up in the E.R.

“This is one of the most common times we see injuries to the index fingers or the thumb. It’s so important that if you carve a turkey, you have to carve away from you and not toward you,” said Dr. Robert Glatter, an emergency doctor from Lennox Hill Hospital.

Dr. Glatter says another ailment people suffer from during this holiday is known as “holiday heart.”

“Basically people overindulge. They drink too much alcohol, they eat too much, and then all of a sudden there is a surge of our stress hormones. This causes our heart to speed up at very rapid rates,” said Glatter.

“They overstuff themselves, they get a little extra stuffing, that dry stuffing from grandma,” Queens resident Malik Allicott told CBS 2.

Dr. Glatter also says family Thanksgiving football games can result in visits to the hospital.

“In the midst of these games, we see a lot of people with knee injuries, they may fall and have a wrist injury or a fracture,” said Dr. Glatter.

Burn injuries are also common on Thanksgiving, whether you’re using outdoor equipment to smoke the turkey or simply using the oven or stove inside your home.

“The tipsy toddler” is another name hospitals have given to small children who get a hold of their parents’ alcoholic beverages like wine or cocktails.

“This could actually lead to low blood sugar and trigger a seizure. Sleepiness is the number one symptom.”

As you’re preparing your holiday feast, safety should be the no. 1 thing you keep in mind this Thanksgiving.
