A theft device was uncovered in a busy Chicago Target.

It’s one of the busiest stores inside Chicago’s Loop, and now the ATM inside the Target is surrounded by police after someone found a skimmer inside the machine.

Police pulled the skimmer device from the TCF ATM inside the Target located on State and Madison in the Loop. The skimmer was found by someone doing maintenance on the machine. A skimmer is used to steal credit card information while you’re using your card at the ATM.

A couple of the biggest concerns and questions this morning are: what happens if you use that ATM and what exactly is the risk factor?

If you’ve withdrawn money or made any type of transaction from this ATM, first make sure to check your accounts for fraudulent activity. Notify the bank immediately if you spot anything suspicious. TCF’s website says it provides zero fraud liability so long as you contact them within 60 days about the fraudulent charges.

This particular location is one of the most popular Targets in Chicago. The ATM is right next to one of the cash registers, but someone was still able to slip the device into the machine without anyone noticing. However, there are seven cameras surrounding the machine which may give police clearer insight in regards to who placed the skimmer there.
