The majority of one of Earth’s most well-known insects has vanished.

Nonprofit Milkweed Matters say the monarch butterfly population has dropped by 90 percent over the last 20 years due to the loss of habitat. The nonprofit was formed to help restore that population, as well as other pollinators.

The organization says that without pollinators like monarch butterflies, production of fruits and vegetables could be greatly affected. But you can help! Milkweed Matters is encouraging people to drop seed balls, which have milkweed, across their land. They say milkweed is essential for the breeding and diet of monarch butterflies.

“We don’t need to get rid of the all the pollinating flowers,” said Nancy Scott of Milkweed Matters. “We don’t need to get rid of those wild flowers. It’s not weedy, it’s really necessary. Our lives are dependent on it because we need the pollinators, and we’re killing them by our practices.”

The organization says the growth of cities as well as farmers using herbicides has also played a role in the decline of the monarch butterfly population.

If you don’t have a yard or lots of land to throw seeds on, that’s okay. Milkweed Matters says you can play a role by helping to raise awareness of the issue and encouraging others to do the same.
