Alexis Hermosillo is the new mayor of El Mirage, Arizona.

She’s only 29 years old and is considered a force in her community. However, she stresses this new wave of energy is not all about her; it’s a team effort.

“It’s been nine months but it’s felt like three years, but that’s a wonderful thing,” said Hermosillo.

She’s the fresh new face around city hall and Hermosillo is pumping new life into the position and the city. She says her family has been residing in El Mirage for generations.

“It’s beautiful to hear people say that there’s a new energy around city hall, especially in the community and in our city. I definitely feel like that’s been a team effort,” said Hermosillo.

Her passion for politics was sparked early when she served in the offices of Phoenix City Councilman Michael Nowakowski and congressman Raul Grijalva. But Hermosillo is El Mirage-born and raised with an exciting vision for her city.

“It’s just about growing the workforce, really providing job opportunities for people and also looking for educational opportunities that will really help our community grow,” said Hermosillo.

Hermosillo says being viewed as a role model just comes with the territory of being the mayor.

“I love to see whenever young people come and say, ‘I’m so excited that you’re my mayor. We’re into the same things,'” said Hermosillo.

But when it comes down to business, Hermosillo says it’s about all individuals coming together to work as a community.

“I would love to serve as beacon of light to individuals whether they’re young, whether they’re older -regardless of what backgrounds they come from,” said Hermosillo.

Hermosillo says her main focus is economic growth. Now that Microsoft is in El Mirage, she says she wants to continue fostering that relationship, as well as another good business relationship with Luke Air Force Base.

She hopes this momentum will help attract new opportunities to the city of El Mirage.
