The back-to-school routine started this morning for many students in Pittsburgh school districts.

There’s an update for drivers as they will be sharing the road with a lot of buses today.

Because of the bus driver shortages, there is a change in the routes that many bus drivers are now taking. The shortage continues to get worse, so Pittsburgh Public Schools decided it would be best to stagger these schedules and alter some routes at several schools this year.

The new schedules are as follows:

Banksville K-5, Roosevelt PreK-5, and Whittier K-5 will each start 20 minutes later at 8:30 this morning.

South Brook 6-8 will start ten minutes later at 9:20 AM. Students at Schiller 6-8 in Troy Hill will start around two hours earlier at 7:36 AM.

Seventh and eighth grade students at Pittsburgh CAPA downtown will ride the Port Authority buses. Sixth graders at CAPA will still be on the yellow school buses. However, the Pittsburgh Public Schools chief operations officer says students and parents should expect bus rides to take around an hour.

The middle school students who attend Environmental Charter School in Garfield through Pittsburgh Public Schools transports to and from school will also be riding Port Authority buses. The same goes for Carrick High School students.

District administrators say they don’t anticipate any more changes to their routes or schedules this school year.

The school bus shortage is a nationwide issue. The number of available bus drivers in Pittsburgh has dropped by 120 compared to last year.
