Two suspects are now in police custody after they allegedly went on a shooting rampage at a suburban Denver STEM high school yesterday.

One is 18-year-old Devon Erickson, and the other is a currently unidentified juvenile. They are believed to be students at the school.

School buses dropped off students at a rec center after the shooting. This is the location where many worried parents reunited with their children. According to students, there was a lockdown due to the shootings. Students described hearing “big bangs” which they assumed were gunshots. The loud, disruptive noises were also accompanied by screams.

Authorities say the two students opened fired on two classrooms. Officers were able to arrive within two minutes. According to the officers, “we did struggle with the suspects to take them into custody and they are in custody.”

Nearly 1,850 students attend the K-12 STEM School. Seniors are preparing for their high school graduation this week.

Senior Paul Harmston said, “not the thing you expect the last three days of your high school to have happen.”

A former student, Michael Schwartz, described a situation where his friend tried to go after one of the shooters: “With his help, a couple of other kids were able to pin [the shooter] to the ground, but because of that, he got shot a lot more than everyone else.”

Authorities went to the homes of both shooters yesterday to try to determine a motive.

18-year-old Kendrick Castillo, a student at STEM School Highlands Ranch, was fatally shot. Eight students have been reported injured.
