Online shopping might get a little pricier.

These days, it’s hard to find someone who doesn’t spend hours and hours shopping online, whether it be eBay, Amazon, or any other e-commerce site. And now, a lawmaker could make it such that you will have to spend even more money because of a new proposed online sales tax bill. That bill is currently making its way to the state senate.

If you shop at stores exclusively online, you may have noticed that there is never any sales tax included. However, if Sen. Joe Gruters gets his way, that will change. He filed Senate Bill 126 this month asking his fellow lawmakers to impose an online sales tax. While stores in Florida do have sales tax, they don’t need to if they don’t have a physical location.

One expert says he’s not a fan of the bill, but it would level the playing field.

“The Amazon effect has negatively impacted the brick and mortar retail industry to the point now where there are many malls out there that are vacant or have very few tenants in them,” said Dr. Jim Mennie of Florida Polytechnic University.

Dr. Mennie gives the bill a 50/50 shot at passing. Lawmakers will take a closer look at the bill in early 2020.
