Police say a man stole an airport shuttle bus from San Francisco International Airport today.

The president of the shuttle bus company described the crime as a “bus-jacking.” Now, it’s in a mechanic shop’s parking lot in southern San Francisco after an unusual trip.

The bus-jacking happened at noon at SFO’s busy international terminal. A SkyPark shuttle bus was picking up and letting off customers when a man appeared out of nowhere.

According to the owner of SkyPark, the man put his arm up, keeping any new customers from getting on, and then ordered the folks on board to get off because he said, “I’m taking this bus home.”

As he was starting to drive away, the bus-jacker had a sudden realization.

“How do you close these doors?” he yelled out to the driver.

“I’m not helping you with that!” replied the driver.

That’s when the bus-jacker took off. The bus was later recovered in Berkeley along Ashby Avenue sitting across three lanes of traffic.

It was then towed to a nearby shop where the mechanic said it appeared the bus had run out of gas.

“I like it. You don’t want people to get away with stuff,” said traveler Andy Kleber.

Technically, the bus-jacker got away but the bus was recovered.

According to witnesses, the robber was calm and nobody was hurt. He did not appear to be armed at the time. He decided to not take any chances and gave up the bus quickly.

“This day and age, the only thing you can do is be alert and don’t try to fight it,” said El Rancho Inn bus driver Ravi Lal.

Some of the passengers said the robber was so calm and spoke with such authority that they assumed he was another bus driver telling them to move along and catch the next bus. However, one of the passengers caught on and called the police before he went on his joyride.
