More than 200 first responders in Tulsa, Oklahoma are taking this morning to honor the first responders who died in the attacks on September 11, 2001.

Hundreds of other people will join in this event at First Place Tower. After gathering at First Place Tower, those first responders will walk the tower and remember the sacrifices made on this day 18 years ago.

This is the third year of Tulsa’s annual stair climb. It symbolizes the first responders who went back into harm’s way in the World Trade Center towers to save as many lives as they possibly could.

The climbers will be in full bunker gear. They will climb the tower three times, which equals the height of the Twin Towers. Each step taken will signify the ultimate sacrifice made that day.

“People that could’ve made it out alive kept going back in and that’s what we want to remember. That’s the level of service and level of commitment that kind of refocuses us and centers us every day on every call that we go on,” said Vice President of Tulsa Firefighters Local 176 Matt Lay.

This event is also helping first responders to raise money for their charity, Hydrants of Hope, which benefits children with cancer.

First responders shared a moment of silence at 8:46 AM, the time of the first attack before dividing into groups and going onward with their climb.
