The famous weatherman will be undergoing immediate treatment.

TV personality and longtime NBC weatherman Al Roker appeared on NBC’s Today this morning to announce that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and will be taking a leave of absence as he undergoes treatment. Roker was first diagnosed with cancer back in September.

“It’s a good news-bad news kind of thing,” he said. “Good news is we caught it early. Not great news is that it’s a little aggressive, so I’m going to be taking some time off to take care of this.”

Despite the somewhat sensitive nature of his diagnosis, Roker said that he was firm in his resolve to announce it publicly in order to raise awareness. According to Roker, 1 in 9 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point in their lives, though for African American men, the chances worsen at 1 in 7 men.

“So if you detect it early this is a really treatable disease and it’s why I wanted to take you along my journey so we can all learn together how to educate and protect the men in our lives,” he said.

Roker will be undergoing surgery at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City next week. His surgeon, Dr. Vincent Laudone, said that his cancer “appears somewhat limited or confined to the prostate.” However, he noted that the cancer is rather aggressive, and as such, a full removal of Roker’s prostate has been recommended.

Roker’s friends and family have rallied around him in support, with the most vocal voice coming from his wife, Deborah Roberts, who stressed that neither she nor Roker himself want people to feel sorry for him.

“We’ll just wait and see, and hopefully in about two weeks, I’ll be back” on Today,” Roker concluded.
