The Always Home Camera will patrol households.

Yesterday, during an online hardware event held by Amazon, the company’s security division, Amazon Ring, unveiled their newest development in home security technology: the Always Home Camera drone.

The AHC drone is lightweight and compact, resting in a cubic charging cradle when not in use. When motion is detected in the house, the drone takes off from the cradle, revealing an HD security camera. The drone will fly to the scene of the disturbance and begin taking video footage. The footage is recorded in the home’s Ring system, though it can also be streamed directly to a smartphone with a companion app installed. The AHC can also be programmed to take off at regular intervals for patrols, flying along a path designated by either the user or the house’s Ring system.

“We know when something happens our customers want to be able to see exactly what’s going on, but it’s not always feasible to have whole-home coverage,” said Ring president Leila Rouhi.

Security and privacy consultants have already expressed concern about the AHC, believing it could pose some risks to privacy or be utilized in illegal fashions. In order to assuage these concerns, Ring has clarified a couple of points about the device. Firstly, it is not meant to be a stealth drone; the AHC’s motors produce an obviously audible, identifiable sound. Anyone nearby can easily hear it. Secondly, when the AHC is in its dock, it can neither record nor stream any video footage, both because its programming prevents it from doing so and because the dock physically blocks the camera. Finally, the AHC can only be preprogrammed or managed by a pre-installed Ring system. There is no way to manually control the device’s flight.
