Coronavirus fears have halted all Hong Kong flights.

American Airlines has halted flights to and from Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles to Hong Kong until February 20. According to the airline, this is due to a drop in demand for flights to China as a result of the coronavirus.

Last week, the Allied Pilots Association, the union that represents a large number of AA’s pilots, sued the airline to force a temporary stop to all Chinese flights for pilot safety. Mainland China flights were suspended, and will be until late March, but Hong Kong flights were still supposed to be carried out. In response to this, the union advised its members to refuse to pilot flights to Hong Kong, prompting today’s suspensions.

The union was relieved that AA complied with their demands. “We are pleased and proud that American Airlines is now leading with this safety decision to protect our passengers, fellow employees and communities during this uncertain time,” said union spokesman and American Airlines Captain Dennis Tajer. In response to the union’s pressure, other airlines, including Delta and United, have also begun to suspend flights to mainland China and Hong Kong.

The coronavirus was recently classified as a global health emergency by the WHO, with over 400 deaths confirmed in China. At least 150 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed outside of China so far.
