A university staff member was injured in the explosion.
Last night, a staff member of the virtual reality center at Northeastern University in Boston discovered an unusual, unaddressed package in front of the building. When they opened the package, they found a note encased in a hard plastic shell, but when they opened the shell, an explosive device went off. Police and medical responders were called to the scene to dispose of the package and give treatment to the staff member.
The staff member was treated for hand injuries, including lacerations from explosion shrapnel, but is mostly unharmed. As for the note, which was successfully retrieved from the remains of the package by police, it contained a long, rambling rant about Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, academic institutions, and virtual reality. The note was not signed with a name, nor was a reason for the explosive device provided in its message. Investigations into the sender and motivation of the package are still ongoing.
Following the incident, university police chief Michael Davis stressed that the school is safe. “It’s very important to note, our campus is secure,” he said. The campus will reopen later today.
Boston Mayor Michelle Wu praised local law enforcement for their expedient response to the incident. “We want to make sure to emphasize that this is of the utmost priority, the safety and well-being of all our young people here,” Wu said during a news conference.
