The seventh Democratic debate for the American presidency was held last night at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Six nominees gathered on stage to square off before the Iowa caucuses, which will be held on Feb. 3.

Among those who took the stage were Former Vice President and Democratic front-runner Joe Biden, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Sen. Amy Klobuchar and hedge fund manager Tom Steyer. Sen. Cory Booker and author Marianne Williamson just announced earlier this week that they will both be ending their campaigns.

The debate was the first since Quassem Soleimani was killed in an airstrike in Baghdad. This event was used as a premise for the candidates to talk in further detail about foreign policy, which was one of the first topics of the evening.

Sanders called out Biden for his support of the Iraq War in 2002, stating, “Joe and I listened to what Dick Cheney and George Bush and Rumsfeld had to say. I thought they were lying. I didn’t believe them for a moment. I took to the floor. I did everything I could to prevent that war. Joe saw it differently.”

Another topic that was highlighted was the discussion of whether or not there was any truth to Sanders telling Warren that a woman could not be elected to the presidency. Warren claims Sanders told this to her in a private conversation, but Sanders vehemently denies this claim. At the end of the debate, Warren and Sanders are shown exchanging inaudible words, which has become the subject of many inquiring minds.

The eighth Democratic debate will take place on Feb. 7, 2020 at Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire.
