Temperatures might be in the 90s in Denver today and this weekend, but nevertheless, big winter gear stores want to be front and center for you ahead of ski season.

Ski resorts just opened last month, which means many stores will inevitably have big deals this weekend. Though it’s still very summer-like in the mountains, this is the unofficial kickoff to ski season.

This sales tradition started back in the 1950s with “Sniagrab,” which is “bargains” spelled backwards. Sniagrab was a Labor Day sale at the Sports Castle on Broadway. But when Sports Authority went out of business, Sniagrab died with it.

Fortunately, Christy Sports and Epic Mountain Gear are keeping the tradition alive. The Power Daze sale at Christy Sports goes until Sept. 3 and Ski Wrecks starts tomorrow at Epic Mountain Gear. You can check out discounted gear while also having the last chance this weekend to get the lowest prices on ski passes and lift tickets.

If you have kids, Colorado offers two free passes for kids that live there. Kids can get the original 5th Grade Passport from Colorado Ski Country. Fifth graders will get three days of free lift tickets at 22 Colorado resorts and Epic SchoolKids for kids K-5. They will get four free days at Vail Oat Resorts.

“All they have to do is come in, prove they live here, prove they’re going to school here, and they get an Epic SchoolKids pass,” said Jim Fuller of Vail Resorts Retail.

All of the above passes come with a free lesson.
