It seems vacationers are itching to get back out to sea.

According to business analysts, advance bookings for vacation cruises in 2021 are up nine percent compared to this time last year. This is somewhat unusual, considering a large number of luxury cruise ships are currently grounded or quarantined at sea due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Since the infamous Diamond Princess cruise in February held its staff and passengers in quarantine for almost a month, multiple cruise ships have begun developing COVID-19 cases while still at sea, forcing similar circumstances. As was the case with the Diamond Princess, docks both local and international are extremely reluctant to accept these ships, as they are concerned about the virus spreading even more. Even so, vacation bookings are still occurring as usual, though analysts have noted that many of the bookings are the result of roll-over credits granted to customers due to cancelled cruises, so it could just be a matter of vacationers securing a spot for themselves rather than actually planning a cruise.

One cruise ship that is trying to get its passengers onto land is the Zaandam, a ship with Holland America with at least 200 passengers confirmed to be sick with COVID-19. The ship has been searching for a place to dock, but has been denied port in Chile, Peru and Argentina. The Zaandam’s sister ship, the Rotterdam, temporarily connected with the Zaandam in order to separate the healthy passengers from the sick ones, though still need to find a place to dock together. The ships have finally been granted permission to port in Florida after a deal was reached by the Broward County Commission in Fort Lauderdale. However, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis publicly expressed his reluctance to let the ships dock, saying that Florida “cannot afford to have people who are not even Floridians dumped into South Florida using up those valuable resources.” Nevertheless, the ships will be docking this afternoon.
