Sony is banking hard on the success of Epic and Fortnite.

This morning, Epic Games, the developer and publisher of the popular Battle Royale multiplayer game Fortnite, announced that they had received a new $1 billion in funding from a variety of third-party investors. Thanks to this new cash injection, Epic Games is now worth approximately $28.7 billion. Interestingly, a large portion of the billion, $200 million to be specific, came from a singular source: Sony.

The Sony Group Corporation invested $200 million into Epic in order to advance their existing partnership, as well as, according to the official statement on the matter, “advance the state of the art in technology, entertainment, and socially-connected online services.”

“We are grateful to our new and existing investors who support our vision for Epic and the Metaverse. Their investment will help accelerate our work around building connected social experiences in Fortnite, Rocket League and Fall Guys, while empowering game developers and creators with Unreal Engine, Epic Online Services and the Epic Games Store,” said Epic CEO and Founder Tim Sweeney.

“Epic continues to deliver revolutionary experiences through their array of cutting edge technologies that support creators in gaming and across the digital entertainment industry. We are excited to strengthen our collaboration to bring new entertainment experiences to people around the world. I strongly believe that this aligns with our purpose to fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology,” said Kenichiro Yoshida, Chairman, President and CEO of Sony Group Corporation.

Fortnite‘s “Metaverse” has become a place for mass gatherings and crossovers of enthusiasts from all manners of fandoms, including Marvel, Star Wars, films like John Wick, and several of Sony’s own prominent IPs, such as God of War.
