Tech company Nuro has teamed up with Domino’s for a test run.

For the past year, food delivery has been an absolute necessity of society in order to minimize person to person contact and stay safe during the pandemic. While vaccines are getting into arms now, the period of delivery interest helped to reinvigorate interest into newer and better ways to deliver food to people.

Tech company Nuro, which has been quietly tinkering in the background for a while, has achieved another milestone in its development of the autonomous R2 vehicle. Last year, the R2 received a formal exemption from the US Department of Transportation to operate without a driver, and is so far the only autonomous vehicle to receive such a classification. To stress test the R2, Nuro has teamed up with Domino’s pizza for a little novelty delivery.

This week, customers who order pizza from a particular Domino’s located in Houston, Texas will have the option of having their pizza delivered to them by an autonomous R2. The pizza will be loaded onto the vehicle by Domino’s staff and sent to the customer’s address, at which point the customer will receive a text message to inform them that their pizza is outside. When they go to the R2, they can use a special PIN number provided in the text to unlock its hatch and retrieve the pizza.

This is actually the second time Nuro has partnered with a company to test their autonomous vehicles’ capabilities, having previously teamed up with Kroger for autonomous grocery delivery. Nuro has actually been intending to partner with Domino’s since 2019, but their progress was hampered by their own development schedule, as well as the pandemic.
