It’s officially the end of summer for students in Kansas City, Kansas.

Most grades in the school district begin the new school year today, and some of those students are going to a brand new school.

Gloria Willis Middle School is one of the schools that officially opens today. One of the teachers walking in this morning said she is pumped and ready for the new school year.

Construction crews have also rebuilt Welborn Elementary School this summer, which opens today as well; it’s the oldest school in the district.

Voters approved a referendum that passed in 2016 to pay for these buildings and upgrades to every other school building. The district says having a high quality school setting gives teachers a better environment to prepare students for college and careers.

At Gloria Willis Middle School, there is a collaboration room inside the media center and a maker’s space where students can engineer their ideas and find ways to turn those ideas into tangible products that they can touch.

The district says the aforementioned school is state-of-the-art in every way imaginable, and students will be able to see it with their own eyes today.
