The classic duo are taking one last adventure through time.

One of the most iconic duos of the late 80s, early 90s, William “Bill” S. Preston, Esq. and Theodore “Ted” Logan, better known simply as Bill and Ted, are returning for a brand new film this summer, and Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are returning to fill the rockers’ shoes once again. Bill & Ted Face the Music will be the conclusion to a film trilogy nearly 30 years in the making, though if the new trailer is any indication, things are taking a bit of a somber turn.

The premise of the series, if you need a quick refresher, is that Bill and Ted’s band, Wyld Stallyns, is supposed to be a musical sensation that unites the entire Earth and everyone on it in perpetual harmony, as they were informed by a traveler from the future named Rufus (played by the late George Carlin). At the end of the second film, the duo seemed to be well on their way to brokering world peace. However, in the trailer, we see that many years have passed, and Wyld Stallyns has fallen out of style. The boys’ marriages to the Princesses (recast in this film to Jayma Mays and Erinn Hayes) are on the rocks, and their respective daughters (played by Brigette Lundy-Paine and Samara Weaving) want nothing to do with them. Things become even more dire when another future visitor comes to the duo, telling them that if they can’t compose the song that brings about world peace, the entire universe is doomed. Despite being over the hump and out of style, Bill and Ted will need to rediscover their muse and save reality with music.

The film will be directed by Dean Parisot, who said back in February that “we’ve gone from a homework assignment to saving all space and time.” William Sadler will also be returning to his role of the Grim Reaper from the second film, and George Carlin’s character, Rufus, will even make a cameo thanks to archival footage. Bill & Ted Face the Music is set to release in theaters on August 21, 2020.
