The act has prompted feuds both in real life and online.

At the tail-end of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address last night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi surprised the audience by holding up a copy of the President’s speech and tearing it up. This occurred while both of them were still standing on the dais, with Pelosi right behind Trump.

Commentary immediately erupted from both sides of the political spectrum, with conservatives condemning the act as petty and childish and liberals praising it as an act of defiance. As of writing, hashtags like #PettyPelosi, #PelosiMeltdown, #NancyPelosiROCKS, and #NancytheRipper are trending high on Twitter.

Some have theorized that Pelosi’s actions were a deliberate attempt to prevent Trump ignoring her attempts at a handshake at the beginning of the SOTU from trending. Pelosi’s office did not comment on those theories, but did release a formal statement last night.

“The manifesto of mistruths presented in page after page of the address tonight should be a call to action for everyone who expects truth from the President and policies worthy of his office and the American people,” the statement read.
