A 6.5 earthquake struck early this morning.

At approximately 4:03 AM PDT this morning, the US Geological Survey detected a magnitude 6.5 earthquake near the Nevada city of Tonopah, located about 3 miles north from Las Vegas. The quake was determined to have occurred at a depth of approximately 4.7 miles deep. After the initial quake, aftershocks were recorded at magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 5.0. For reference, an earthquake with a magnitude between 6.0 and 6.9 is considered “strong,” the third highest possible magnitude.

Thankfully, no major injuries were reported from the populace of Tonopah, and damages have been minimal beyond excessive shaking. “It really shook a lot of groceries off the shelves,” Tonopah gas station employee Keith Hasty told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Part of the U.S. 95 and State Route 360 were also temporarily closed as state troopers from nearby counties inspected the roads for damage.

Due to the strength of the quake and its aftershocks, its effects could be felt in both California and Utah. Twitter users in both states have been tweeting their locations, along with confirmations that the quake was felt. Some users also included videos to show the physical effects of the shaking.

Tonopah, Nevada is most well known for the Tonopah Test Range, where the US Military tests experimental aircraft prototypes. The Test Range is famed for its connection to the infamous Area 51.
