Award season marches on with another awards ceremony, the BAFTAs, which is basically the British Oscars. The Netflix Spanish-language film “Roma” won the top prize, but it was Britain’s own “The Favourite” that won the most.

Both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress went to the stars of “The Favourite,” Olivia Colman and Rachel Weisz, respectively. It also took home awards for writing, costume design, production design, and Outstanding British Film. Though the film has received very positive reviews, it’s less likely to do as well at the Oscars because the BAFTAs tend to favor British films (understandably).

“Roma” took home best film, best foreign language film, best director, and best cinematography- an impressive sweep that could be an indication of things to come at the Oscars.

Rami Malek won the best actor award for his portrayal of Freddy Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” another British film (though Malek himself is not British).

American film “A Star Is Born” won the award for best music in a film, which director and star Bradley Cooper accepted. Lady Gaga, his co-star and duet partner was in Los Angeles attending the Grammys, which also saw wins for the “A Star Is Born” soundtrack.

It’s always hard to predict what will happen during awards season, and I’ll leave the handicapping to the real experts. But it’s often safe to say that the way the SAGs, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes, so go the Oscars.
