Awards season is officially over, and the final winners are in. The 2019 Academy Awards ceremony was held on February 24th, and as usual there were plenty of surprises and plenty of expected wins as well.

The biggest upset of the night was the biggest award of the night: Best Picture, which was won by underdog Green Book. Few prognosticators saw that particular outcome, as there were a large number of strong contenders that received more attention in the lead up to the awards. That included Roma, Black Panther, The Favourite, and A Star Is Born.

Many expected Roma to become the first foreign language film to win Best Picture, but despite that loss, its director Alfonso Cuaron won for his category.

Best Actor was won by Rami Malek for the Freddy Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, which was widely expected. Best Actress was Olivia Colman for The Favourite in a category that had been considered a bit of a toss-up. Best Supporting Actress went to Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk, a relatively low-profile film. Rounding out the acting awards, Mahershala Ali won his second Best Supporting Actor trophy for Green Book.

In another expected major win, Lady Gaga and her collaborators won the award for Best Original Song for “Shallow” from A Star is Born.

The other big news of the night was the first Oscar wins for any Marvel movie – or any superhero movie for that matter. Black Panther received awards for Original Score, Production Design, and Costume Design.

Some people expected the night to be a trainwreck after the high-profile loss of host Kevin Hart, leading to the first Academy Awards ceremony without a host in 30 years. But things seemed to go off generally without a hitch – except for Rami Malek falling off the stage, but that’s a different story.
