Bowie’s estate sold Warner the rights to his 26 albums.

Throughout most of his career and even after his passing in 2016, David Bowie is still regarded as one of the most beloved, genre-pushing artists in the history of modern music. Since launching his career in the 60s and up until his death, he created 26 albums encompassing over 400 songs. As of today, all 26 of those albums are now the property of Warner Music.

In another major musical acquisition, Warner Music has purchased the legal rights to Bowie’s entire discography from his estate, including all 26 albums, plus the posthumous album “Toy.” While Warner themselves didn’t disclose the precise scope of the deal, sources allegedly close to the matter have claimed the price tag is in excess of $250 million.

Media rights companies like Warner Music have spent the last couple of years snatching digital rights to various musicians as pandemic-induced slowdowns have made the production of physical music less feasible. Warner Music currently owns the rights to the discographies of Cardi B, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Madonna.

As for the memory of David Bowie, this Saturday, January 8, is his birthday. If he were still with us today, he would be turning 75 years old.
