The rising wave of school shootings is prompting some parents to consider new ways to protect their kids, but some aren’t convinced this is the best solution.

One of the first bullet-resistant backpacks was created back in 2007 by a Massachusetts dad, but now they’re online and in retailers like Office Depot.

“Honestly, the whole idea just scares me,” said one local mother, Monique Robinson.

Robinson is worried these backpacks will create a false sense of security.

“I don’t think you could even really prepare for that because when they’re in the classroom, do they really have the backpack on? Do they have it on all the time? I think it creates fear, so I wouldn’t be a proponent of it, but I get it. I get it that some parents would feel like ‘my child would be a little more safe,'” said Robinson.

Just last year, Inside Edition tested a bullet-proof backpack. It stopped a bullet.

“There is definitely a spike in sales that happens after a mass shooting, but more so after a school shooting,” said Guard Dog Security president Yasir Sheikh.

The same backpack brand is currently being sold at Office Depot and Office Max.

“It’d make me feel scared just walking around. I don’t know why,” said 12-year-old Sebastian Reyes.

His mother, Sandra, says she prefers other safety options at school.

“I think it’s good, but instead of having that, why not having something where they can check that kids don’t bring guns to school instead so we can feel more secure?” said Reyes.

But teacher John Herceg supports anything that would add extra safety for children.

“At the beginning, I’m sure a lot of people would be worried about it or kind of concerned about it, but again, if it’s safety for the children then absolutely – anything for them,” said Herceg.

There are a variety of different bullet-resistant backpacks, but they may not all be created equal and withstand different types of weapons.
