From Diana Ross, to the Temptations, to the Jackson 5, to Stevie Wonder – it’s hard not to be well aware of the musical legends that come out of Detroit.

Detroit’s Motown Museum is getting a multi-million dollar donation to make the experience there even more meaningful. The money is coming from no other than Motown founder himself, Barry Gordy.

The donation is $4 million and it’s all going towards an expansion. The Hitsville U.S.A. houses that are lined up together will remain the same, but the change is coming to the back of the houses. A larger area that people can walk through, ponder and enjoy is the goal for the new expansion that will be implemented behind the famed house exhibits.

The expansion would house interactive exhibits, a state-of-the-art recording studio, and more retail space all within 50,000 square feet.

The plans to expand have been in the works since 2016. The project is estimated to cost $50 million. According to The Motown Museum, Barry Gordy’s donation is the largest donation to date. As of today, there is no word yet on when construction would start, but this does coincide with the 60th anniversary of Motown.
