Michigan just made history by becoming the first state in the country to ban flavored e-cigarettes.

This all comes after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has been pushing to get nicotine out of kids’ hands.

E-cigarettes are as easy to get as regular cigarettes; you can walk into most convenience stores and make a purchase. But Gov. Whitmer has been repeatedly saying that she wants to make it illegal to sell these non-traditional nicotine products to minors.

Back in June, she signed a bill making it illegal to sell e-cigarettes to minors. She cited a study from last year that showed that 21 percent of American high school students and five percent of middle school students reported having used e-cigarettes or other vape products within a 30-day period.

The governor stressed flavored e-cigarettes attract the youth with flavored names like Fruit Loops or Fanta. She called this a public health crisis. Just last week, the state health department said it’s investigating six cases of e-cigarettes or vaping-associated respiratory illnesses. All six cases were diagnosed in the past two months and all were reported in the Lower Peninsula.

WXYZ reached out to the governor’s office to get clarification on the Washington Post article about the ban. However, they have not heard anything back yet.

At a local 7-Eleven, a store employee said he hadn’t heard anything from the company’s corporate offices on banning e-cigarettes. However, he did mention that stores have 30 days to comply.
