Alec Baldwin’s prop gun discharged, killing one and injuring another.

Yesterday, the crew of the upcoming film Rust was filming in the deserts of New Mexico. Actor Alec Baldwin, the film’s star, was holding a prop firearm, as the film is a Western and features a large emphasis on gunfighting. However, for reasons that are still not entirely clear, the prop gun somehow discharged an actual projectile while in Baldwin’s hands, hitting director of photography Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza.

Hutchins was taken via helicopter to University of New Mexico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Meanwhile, Souza was taken Christus St. Vincent’s Regional Medical Center, where he was treated.

“According to investigators it appears that the scene being filmed involved the use of a prop firearm when it was discharged,” the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement obtained by CNN. “Detectives are investigating how and what type of projectile was discharged.”

Currently, the investigation into the incident is ongoing, and no one has been formally charged. Press requests sent to Baldwin and the film’s production company have not been returned as of writing. Meanwhile, members of the film production industry have offered their condolences to Hutchins’ family, with many citing her as an excellent crew member.

“I’m in shock. I was so lucky to have had Halyna Hutchins as my DP on Archenemy,” actor Joe Manganiello wrote on Twitter. “An incredible talent & great person. I can’t believe this could happen in this day and age… gunfire from a prop gun could kill a crew member? What a horrible tragedy. My heart goes out to her family.”

“My greatest fear is that someone will be fatally hurt on one of my sets,” wrote director James Gunn. “I pray this will never happen. My heart goes out to all of those affected by the tragedy today on Rust, especially Halyna Hutchins & her family.”
