The pandemic has claimed another industry event.

The Tokyo Game Show is a yearly convention and conference where Japanese video game developers and publishers showcase their newest products, as well as tease upcoming projects. Unfortunately, as has become the norm since the pandemic began in earnest several months ago, large industry events have been deemed unsafe for the health of both consumers and developers, leading to multiple cancellations. The Tokyo Game Show, despite not being scheduled until September 24, is sadly no exception, as the event organizers officially announced the event’s cancellation on Thursday.

An announcement was posted on the event’s website. “Due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) on a global scale and the situation remains unpredictable in Japan as well, the organizer and the co-organizers have reached this decision after a long consideration to place the utmost priority on the health and safety of visitors, exhibitors and stakeholders. We ask for your kind understanding and cooperation.”

However, though the official event has been cancelled, the organizers are in the process of setting up a virtual event to take its place. Details on this virtual presentation are not currently available, but the event organizers say they will have more specifics by the end of May.

The Tokyo Game Show follows multiple high-profile event cancellations in the global gaming industry, including the 2020 Electronics Entertainment Expo (also known as E3), the 2020 GamesCom convention, and the 2020 Evo fighting game tournament. Many of these events, much like the Tokyo Game Show, are attempting to arrange virtual events and livestreams, but as this is the first time such things have been necessary to arrange en masse, the logistics are still being worked out.
