University of Nevada, Las Vegas students say there is not enough parking on campus.

They say they are sick of circling full lots to look for spaces and walking long distances in the heat.

Parking has always been one of the biggest problems on campus. Complaints can be heard everywhere, even on social media where it has caught the attention of some university officials. Now, students are demanding a change.

Students say the parking lot at the Thomas & Mack Center is one of the worst to look for parking. They say around noon the lot gets completely full, which is why they’re asking university officials for more spaces.

“Oh, I’ve been told that parking is just terrible here,” said UNLV student Kyle Vincent Catan.

Catan is a freshman at UNLV who took the advice of his brother.

“My brother advised me to get the reserved parking spot. It was super expensive. I had to pay $675, but the only reason I did was to not have to worry about parking,” said Catan.

“Even getting here at like 12:00, nah. You have to park all the way, all the way in the back,” said UNLV student Isabelle Link.

Many students feel parking permits are too expensive and that citations are given too generously and cost too much to pay off.

“I remember the first day of school, I couldn’t get into the parking garage because it was completely filled,” said Link.

UNLV says Fall semester is their busiest time on campus, and although they understand that parking is a concern, they say there is enough parking on campus for all students, staff and visitors. According to the university, there are 14,000 parking spaces on campus and just over 30,000 students enrolled. But with classes staggered throughout the day, they say not all students are on campus at the same time, which gives everyone a chance to have a space.

University officials say the lot by the Mack Center has the most spaces and advise students to try to find parking there. However, they say it’s best to get in as early as possible to ensure you get a space.
