Walgreens has announced that it won’t sell the drug mifepristone in 21 states.

Back in January, the US Food and Drug Administration officially approved mifepristone, a medication for inducing an abortion, for commercial distribution from approved pharmaceutical retailers. Pharmacy chain Walgreens announced in February that they would be seeking certification to distribute the drug, but then ran afoul of attorneys in 21 states. The attorneys, representing the interests of Republican Governors, blocked Walgreens from selling the drug in their states, which the chain acquiesced with.

Walgreens will still sell the drug “in any jurisdiction where it is legally permissible to do so,” the company said in a statement. “Once we are certified by the FDA, we will dispense this medication consistent with federal and state laws,” it added.

While California is not one of the affected states, Walgreens has still drawn the ire of California Governor Gavin Newsom who, upon hearing Walgreens’ announcement of limited sales, announced himself that his state would no longer be doing business with them.

“California won’t be doing business with @walgreens — or any company that cowers to the extremists and puts women’s lives at risk,” Newsom wrote on his personal Twitter. “We’re done.”

According to a Newsom spokesperson, Brandon Richards, the state has begun a review of their relationship with Walgreens to determine the viability of a business halt. “We will not pursue business with companies that cave to right wing bullies pushing their extremist agenda or companies that put politics above the health of women and girls,” Richards said in a statement.
