The next Kirby game is right around the corner.

During a previous Nintendo Direct presentation in the fall, Nintendo announced Kirby and the Forgotten Land, a new game in their first-party Kirby series for the Switch console. The initial trailer only showed some brief gameplay, though it still impressed onlookers thanks to its lush and surprisingly open-ended 3D level design, a first for the series. The game was slated for a spring 2022 release, and it seems Nintendo will be making good on that promise to the letter.

In a new trailer for Kirby and the Forgotten Land posted to the official Nintendo YouTube channel this morning, it was revealed that the game has already received its official release date: March 25, 2022. Considering the game was only announced four months ago, this is a remarkably fast turnaround for Nintendo, though considering the high-quality state of the footage shown at the aforementioned Direct presentation, it’s likely the developers were already mostly done before Nintendo made the announcement.

Besides the release date, the trailer showed off a few of the game’s new features. In addition to the open-ended levels, there are several new Copy Abilities for Kirby, such as Drill, which allows him to dig underground and charge forward, and Ranger, which arms him with a musket. The game also has full couch co-op support, with the second player taking control of the spear-wielding Bandana Waddle Dee. Outside of the levels, Kirby can visit Waddle Dee Town, a makeshift city that grows as Kirby rescues abducted Waddle Dees. As the town grows, new shops will open, and minigames like fishing and a capsule machine will appear.

Pre-orders are already open on the game’s official website.
