Lady Gaga had an emotional night at the Grammys, winning three big awards and appearing to feel every moment of it.

The singer won for Best Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media, both for the song “Shallow” which she performed with Bradley Cooper for their film “A Star Is Born.” The third award was for Best Pop Solo Performance for the song “Joanne,” off her album of the same name.

Gaga has been emotional throughout the promotion of the film, saying how grateful she is for the experience and for Cooper’s support and belief in her through the process of making the film. Cooper also directed the film and both of their performances have received overwhelmingly positive reviews.

“Joanne” is also an emotional song for her. She wrote it in honor of her aunt who passed away, with whom she was very close. The song is about saying goodbye to a dying loved one.

In her acceptance speech for “Shallow,” Gaga brought up one issue touched upon by the film: mental health. Barely holding back tears, she pleaded with people to take care of each other and to reach out if in need of help.

Another reason for Gaga’s tears: accepting the awards for “Shallow” alone. Meanwhile, across the pond in London, Cooper was attending a different awards ceremony, the BAFTAs (basically the British Oscars). The two split between the two awards ceremonies so that they could be represented at both. As a reward, Cooper accepted the award for best music in a film.

The film lost its awards in acting and directing at the BAFTAs and is excepted to do so at the Oscars as well, but since it is a film about music, these wins are certainly major, meaningful ones.
