The incident dumped 264,000 gallons of water and fish into the hotel and nearby streets.

The Radisson Hotel in Germany’s capital of Berlin is home to the AquaDom, known as the largest cylindrical aquarium in the entire world. This gigantic aquarium houses over 1,500 tropical fish, living in approximately 264,000 gallons of water. The entirety of that water and those fish all ended up on the ground of the hotel and nearby roads when the entire AquaDom suddenly burst last night.

For reasons that are still under investigation at the time of writing, the outer surface of the tank suddenly exploded outward, launching shards of glass and releasing its entire contents of water and fish. Some structural damage was caused and two individuals were injured, but there were no fatalities or major damage reported.

“There are shards (of glass) everywhere. The furniture, everything has been flooded with water,” Sandra Weeser, a German lawmaker who had been staying at the hotel, told The Associated Press. “It looks a bit like a war zone.”

“I never thought something like this could happen,” said Iva Yudinski, an Israeli tourist.

“Just yesterday, we watched it and we were so amazed from its beauty,” she added, “and suddenly it’s all gone. Everything is a mess, totally mess.”

Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey noted that, due to the particular timing of the incident, the potential of human injury was thankfully very low, though unfortunately, none of the tank’s fish could be saved. The Radisson will be closed until further notice for repairs and investigation.
