The Nintendo-themed attraction opens early next year.

Back in 2020, Universal Studios Japan in Osaka opened Super Nintendo World, an attraction in the overall park themed after the Super Mario Bros. video game franchise. Despite the ongoing COVID-19 concerns at the time, the park proved to be very successful, and further expansions centered around Donkey Kong and Pokemon are already planned. Given the park’s success, western fans have been wondering when the western Universal parks will get a Super Nintendo World of their own. Turns out, very soon.

Universal Studios Hollywood, located in Los Angeles, California, announced this week that their own Super Nintendo World is nearing completion, and will be open for business February 17, 2023. The western version of the park features many of the same features found in the Japanese version, including the augmented reality-powered Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge, the Toadstool Cafe, the 1-UP Factory souvenir shop, mascot character interactions, and most interestingly, the Power-Up Band system. The Power-Up Bands are wireless bands guests can purchase and wear to interact with the various Mario-themed gadgets around the park, including Koopa Shells, Question Mark Blocks, and more.

The release time could prove fortuitous for Universal Hollywood, as the opening is only a few months disconnected from the world premiere of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in theaters. Universal also clarified that their other major park, Universal Orlando in Florida, will be getting a Super Nintendo World expansion as well, though not until 2025.
