The space rock landed on her bed while she was sleeping.

Recently, Ruth Hamilton, a woman living in Golden, a small town in British Columbia, Canada, was asleep in her bed at home. Suddenly, a loud crash rang out through her bedroom, startling her awake and sending her dog into a protective frenzy. Checking around her room, Hamilton discovered that a rock about the size of a human fist had found its way into her bed after apparently punching a hole in her roof.

“I’ve never been so scared in my life,” she told The Canadian Press. “I wasn’t sure what to do so I called 911 and, when I was speaking with the operator, I flipped over my pillow and saw that a rock had slipped between two pillows.”

Hamilton called the police and an investigation was launched on the assumption that a nearby construction crew had detonated an explosive charge, launching debris into the air and through Hamilton’s roof. However, no nearby crews had detonated any explosives, though they had seen several small explosions in the sky. As it turns out, the rock that fell into Hamilton’s bed was a meteorite, which dropped down from space in the midst of a meteorite shower. When the meteorite landed in Hamilton’s bed, it just barely missed her head, only spraying her with some small pieces of debris.

“I was in shock and I just sat here for a few hours shaking,” Hamilton said. “The odds of that happening are so small so I’m pretty grateful to be alive.”

Hamilton will be holding onto the meteorite as a keepsake, and a reminder of her good (and bad) fortune.
