On the ballot this year and taking part in today’s election, Nashville has the largest number of LGBT candidates in city history.

This kind of representation is a first for Nashville. According to the magazine Out & About Nashville, there are a record seven “out” LGBT candidates on the ballot this year. Out & About Nashville says there are already two council members who identify in the LGBT community, Nancy VanReece and Bill Withers. But this year could be history-making if more are elected.

In District 5, which represents east Nashville and downtown, Charles Flowers is an openly-LGBT candidate who is facing off against Pam Murray and Sean Parker. Flowers is an educator and running for metro council.

In District 9, David McMurray is taking on Tonya Hancock and Thomas George for the Madison council seat. McMurray is a former member of the Nashville LGBT Chamber of Commerce and the former president of the Madison Chamber.

The other LGBT candidates vying to be on the council this year include Emily Benedict, Russ Bradford and Zach Young.

Incumbent VanReece is running against an opponent in her district. Incumbent Withers is not running against anyone, so he is set to be on the council this year.
