If you live in Oklahoma, make sure you keep your car registration inside your vehicle from now on.

You may have already been doing this, but this is now coming as a result of a new state law that makes doing so a legal requirement.

Another change that’s coming is if you sell your car, you will get to keep your old license plate instead of leaving it on the car with the new owner. Local police say keeping the license plate helps law enforcement track local car owners. It would also help the car seller avoid getting any tickets or turnpike fees from their old car.

However, if you buy a car from someone and drive without a tag, then you only have a few days to get a new one.

“If you’re driving without a license plate and you just bought the vehicle from someone, then you have five days to do so before you are penalized,” said Officer James Koch of the Broken Arrow Police Department.

If you buy a car from a dealership, you still have 30 days to register the car to avoid any penalties. But under the new law, you’ll have the choice of placing your old tag on the car or buying a new one from your tag agency.
