For many school-aged students in Minnesota, tomorrow will be their first day back at school.

According to Pew Research, only about one-fifth of American students go back this late; the majority go back in the second or third week of August.

The earliest school start date is in Chandler, Arizona. Students start school there on July 23. The country’s latest start date is Sept. 9 in Trenton, N.J.

Some argue that because so much of Minnesota’s celebrations are centered around large events like the state fair and other county fairs, it’s hard to motivate children to focus on schoolwork. In addition, many of the employees at the county and state fairs are teenagers who will go back to school soon.

However, others believe that waiting to start school after Labor Day leaves some businesses with high turnover rates because they are left scrambling to find new employees to replace those students who quit their jobs and go back to school.

Several years ago, Minnesota state officials discussed whether the start date should be moved up to earlier in August. Because schools have to account for necessities like air conditioning, teacher pay, bus drivers, it has ultimately proven ineffective. There has also been major pushback from the Minnesota tourism industry because so many resorts depend on Labor Day weekend for families to visit.
