Poland is still waiting on Germany’s go-ahead.

In an effort to aid Ukraine against Russia’s ongoing invasion, Poland has submitted a formal plan to deliver some of its Leopard 2 tanks to the country in an aid package. However, since the tanks are German-made, they need Germany’s permission before they can send them out. This request has compounded with Ukraine’s own request for armored support from Berlin, raising pressure on Germany to make a decision.

“The Germans have already received our request for consent to the transfer of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine,” Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said on Twitter. “I also appeal to the German side to join the coalition of countries supporting Ukraine with Leopard 2 tanks. This is our common cause, because it is about the security of the whole of Europe!”

Germany has confirmed that the request was received, but have not made a decision at the time of writing, saying only that the matter is being handled with “necessary urgency” and that the decision will be reached “very soon.”

During a virtual appearance at the World Economic Forum last week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed that while the tanks are important, the most important thing is that the countries agree on their delivery.

“We have talked hundreds of times about the shortage of weapons. We cannot go only on motivation,” he said.

“There are moments when there is no need to hesitate. When people say – I’ll give you tanks if someone else does.”
