After missing its Broadway opening, the show will make a streaming debut.

Diana: A New Musical, a musical stage production about the life of Princess Diana of the British Royal Family, was supposed to premiere on a Broadway stage in March. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the show’s premiere was suddenly cancelled right before its opening night. Because the show was already ready to be performed, the director and producers have decided to make it available in a different, safer format: streaming.

Grove Entertainment, The Araca Group, and Frank Marshall announced today that Diana would be premiering first on Netflix on an unspecified date some time next year. The entire Broadway cast, including director Christopher Ashley and star Jeanna de Waal, will take part in an audience-less filming of the production at the Longacre Theater on Broadway. The producers have been coordinating with the Actor’s Equity Association to draft out a safety plan for the show and crew, including recurring testing, proper ventilation checks, and isolation procedures.

“Today, we can announce that we have approved a safety plan for Diana. Now comes the hard part – taking a safety plan from the page and putting it into practice. The work to provide the safest workplace possible in this environment will require everyone to work together, from the employer to every employee,” said Equity Executive Director Mary McColl.

“We speak for the entire company when we say that we couldn’t be more excited to finally be able share our show with theater lovers everywhere,” the producers said in a joint statement. “Though there is no substitute for the live theater, we are honored to be a part of the quality entertainment that Netflix provides its subscribers worldwide.”

Standouts in the cast include Roe Hartrampf as Prince Charles, Erin Davie as Camilla Parker Bowles, and Judy Kaye as Queen Elizabeth. The musical components are being headed by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan, known for their work on Memphis.
